Sensei Jose Cruz
Originally from Puerto Rico, Sensei Cruz has shared his passion for martial arts with students of all ages for nearly three decades.
His journey
Where it started
His first classes were taught at the apartment complex where he worked — and grew into his own karate school in Birmingham.
Across the Birmingham area
He has taught at the Woodstock YMCA, in Bessemer and Hueytown, with Jefferson County Schools and the Boyd School, and at the Birmingham Jewish Community Center. He also started the karate program at Lifetime Fitness in Inverness.
Demonstration team
Sensei Cruz founded the World Yoshukai Karate Demonstration Team. His exceptional skill and dedication earned him the honor of being personally requested to perform by Grandmaster Katsuoh Yamamoto, the founder of Yoshukai Karate, whenever he visited the area. Throughout his martial arts career, Sensei Cruz has performed demonstrations at tournaments across the Southeast and has even showcased his talents in Los Angeles, California.
Today
Sensei Cruz teaches Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Norwood Hodges Community Center in Anniston.
